Celebrating the Eclipse and Transformation
Posted on August 19 2017
We confess that the mystery of the eclipse and all things taboo greatly appeal to us here at Anokha Skin Care. While there are many cultural interpretations of the origins and meanings of the motion of the sun and the moon, the myth of Rahu and Ketu resonates very strongly with us. Vedic legend tells us that many moons ago, a great flood covered the earth. The gods and demons decided to collaborate to salvage precious items which had been submerged. One of these items was amrita, the nectar of the gods. Rahu, who was a demon, disguised himself as a god and took a sip of amrita, thus becoming immortal. The sun and moon immediately detected his deception, and alerted Lord Vishnu. Vishnu threw a discus at Rahu, severing his head from his body. Because he had already become immortal, however, his head lives on as Rahu, while his tail is known as Ketu. They periodically take revenge on the sun and moon by swallowing them, which we see as the solar and lunar eclipses. Many people see the eclipse, and particularly a total eclipse, as a sign of great transformation in some part of their lives. The key is to let go of what no longer serves us, represented by Ketu, and direct our energy to what requires our attention, as indicated by Rahu.
