Saraswati

Posted on March 30 2016

Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, music, the arts, wisdom, and learning.  She is a symbol for the independant woman and thinker. She may be shown with two or four hands, which represent her husband Brahma's four heads: manas (mind), buddhi (intellect), citta (creativity) and ahamkara (ego).  These four hands hold a book (the Vedas), which represent true knowledge; a mala for meditation; a water pot for purification; and a musical instrument which creates harmony.  Saraswati is dressed in pure white, and is typically seated on a white lotus, which symbolizes light, knowledge and truth.  A swan, which indicates moksha, is often seated at her feet.  Musicians, writers, artists and students are especially blessed and protected by the goddess Saraswati.
